MSNBC.com reports today that a man in a violent crowd of people vying for food and supplies screamed “How could God do this to us!?” His voice echoes the sentiments of many who question how a benevolent God could allow such atrocities as the Haitian earthquake to befall mankind. To the horror of many world citizens, zealots like Pat Robertson have even posited that Haiti’s “contract with the devil” is responsible. Both factions are dead wrong of course.
I think it’s important to remember in these times that the world is fallen. We’re in an “anything goes” state of instability, and this is why you will hear many preachers say things like, “Well God have mercy on their souls, it could have been worse.” Why? Because it’s true. Given man’s willful disregard for God’s laws it’s amazing he allows ANY of us to live at all.
I’d be remiss if I didn’t rebuke the words of Pat Robertson. Obviously he does not represent my views or views of any Christians I know. How dare he shout such blasphemy from his ivory tower here in the USA where we have been by and large so fortunate throughout the years. Stand down, Pat, your words are not welcome in the community dialog.

This is your view of a God that is infinite love?
It would seem that, as human beings, we are completely powerless to change being loved infinitely by God.
The tragedy in Haiti is devastating and horrific. And it has absolutely nothing to do with human “sinfulness” or a world that is “fallen.”
Yes, I was marveling at his infinite mercy.
We are, but that doesn’t mean we can’t marvel at it
“Absolutely” is an awfully strong word to use when speculating. I will write that off to your passion
And yes, this is the fallen world. There is nothing you can do or say to change that.
god’s mercy: Indistinguishable from random chance.
